Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty - Gorakh Chand

 Introduction

          Today's world has so many problems but without eliminating the problems on academic sector it is difficult to dream the problem less world. In the same way in academic sector specially student's plagiarism is most common problem. The most common approaches that academic sector should  prevent it call for treating plagiarism either as morally wrong or as a crime.

          Plagiarism is the theft of intellectual property, which is also type of academic dishonesty. The one approach is that the plagiarism as a matter of morality and often create honor codes. By which appeal to the desire of students to do the right thing. The second approach is that to prevent the plagiarism treating it as a breaking rules or as a crime.

          Now a days all the people of society are full of awareness in all the aspect of life. Today's goal driven society, the cheating become more prevalent among the students of University level. It is because of influence of technological advancement and even influence from realms outside of academia.

          The academic integrity is the reflection of honesty and responsibility in academic sector. All the task in the academic session are to be their own not by cheating. The grades and the values honored to him/her should be clear and based on understanding of the student .

          Here in the opposite of the academic integrity is known as academic dishonesty. Academically to show bad use of the academic recourses and bad activities to gain academic qualifications and degree as well as behave like that is known as academic dishonesty.

Types of academic dishonesty

          The academic dishonesty is commonly found in today's world every where because of having no strict rules and implementation. Academic dishonesty can be seen as following types:

Ø Plagiarism

Ø Disruptive Behavior

Ø The miss-use of Online, TeleWeb

Ø The miss-use of Calculator and Computer

Ø Copy from other

Ø Collusion

Ø Fabrication

Ø Misrepresentation

Ø Cheating and etc.

Causes of academic dishonesty

          The academic dishonesty is done knowingly and unknowingly, most of the student are to be involved in academic dishonesty because of following reasons.

Ø Lack of understanding of subject matter.

Ø Lack of understanding of result of plagiarism, cheating and other type of dishonesties.

Ø Thinking himself or herself superior and lack of asking habit to other

Ø Situation and conditions that make to involve in dishonesty

Ø Working load

Ø Lack of laws and implementation of laws related to academic dishonesty etc.

How to avoid academic dishonesty

          The academic dishonesty is seen everywhere because of different reasons, some the students are not known about the plagiarism and academic integrity, the feel that what they are doing is not so bad. Some of the students do not have so many ideas to do the task and study material for assignment and other academic report. In general student think what they are doing is right and take poor decision at all.  So to avoid academic dishonesty we should consider following points.

Ø It is not good to share assignment to friends, if friends are asking or any query than help them but do not give your assignment for copy. Because academic dishonesty does not mean only copy from other but also to make copy to other.

Ø If you have taken help from any sources then your have to write the sources you have taken help as a reference at the end of the assignment with proper format.

Ø In academic sector it is better to take 0, in spite to do the academic dishonesty. So you should not try to copy from other.

Ø During the examination to look here and there is also the academic dishonesty and to ask the question for better under standing is also not good. Being calm and do your own task shows your academic integrity.

Ø Always read your syllabus properly in the starting of the session and ask the difficulties to your teacher or instructor to understand well.

Ø You should be known about your goal and the task you are doing, then only you can go through it and make a project.

Ø Only when the proper time and the situation is there, then you can take help from your teacher and the instructor etc.
